Everyone has more experience than someone else

I am just finishing up my second week at my new job. In a new city. In a new state. I have a lot of advantages over many other people who start a new job, as it's at a different property and division of the same company so even though many things are different, I at least know what questions to ask.

But that's not what I'm writing about today. I moved to a different area of the country (The Western Carolina's) and am slowly learning my way around. So today when I was walking back to my office in Spartanburg from having lunch, a couple of gentleman stopped me on the street and asked me "Hey, are you from around here?" Well, I had to say "Yes, I'm new, but I'm from around here." They were looking for a place in Downtown to eat and I was happy to recommend a little restaurant that I had eaten at a couple of days before.

You see, it's not about how long you live somewhere or about how many people you know, it's just about how willing you are to share the knowledge you have. And today I thought "I may not know much, but I can help these guys out".

Beyond the Thunderdome and other random thoughts

So I thought that driving up on a Sunday would be a good idea, since fewer people drive north on a Sunday, right? Obviously I have not spent enough time on I-95. It was the end of Spring Break AND the end of Bike Week in Daytona so both small cars crammed with college students and motorcycle convoys and trucks pulling trailers with motorcycles were cramming the roads. It did give me the opportunity to make some observations.

1. The best vehicle(s) to travel the American Interstate Highway system in is the Full Size Pickup truck or Full Size SUV. The only thing I had to worry about was some smaller vehicle scratching my paint if they merged into me. THEY on the other hand... Full Mad Max if you know what I mean.

2. City cars such as the Toyota Prius or the Fiat 500 have no place driving 85 MPH on an interstate hwy with said Mad Max vehicles. Even if driven sensibly, which most are not, like moving into the left lane and driving .025 MPH faster than the vehicle you are trying to pass.

3. If you ride a motorcycle and value your life, NEVER ride said motorcycle on a crowded interstate highway. On an 11 hour drive, I saw no less than 2 accidents with bikers on the tarmac and many many more close calls with cars merging over and nearly taking the bikers out. With vehicles running at 80 MPH plus and 20' apart, drivers barely see the cars much less the bikes in their blind spots. Having the right of way is no benefit if you are smeared across the road. (fortunately no photo).

So my purpose here is to record what life is like for a transplanted Floridian who has landed in the Carolina's. I was born in Florida and have lived almost my entire life there. Now I am one of those people who has transplanted themselves to another part of the country. I will no doubt pronounce city names wrong, I will wander around looking for things like a tourist, and I will make the occasional superior judgemental opinionated statement. What I hope to do is record my adventures here for your entertainment. If it is, in fact, entertaining, well I'll let you be the judge of that.

Until next time...
